As a primary school teacher, my favourite time of the day was always storytime.
With everyone sitting on the carpet, I would reach for a book, and we would all disappear into another world.
When reading Roald Dahl’s Danny Champion of the World, we made kites and hot air balloons. And to bring E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web to life, we had a real live piglet in the classroom, thanks to Lucy who lived on a farm near Whitby.
Some of the stories, I had made up, like the seafaring yarns of Uncle Jim, and the tale of three children who travel by balloon with an enigmatic professor to the ‘City of Lights.’
Keep checking back on the bookshelf from time to time. You never know what might show up there.
